i need assistance in opening older excel files in excel 2003. errot
indicates my antivirus is the problem. In that I can not open "any" previous
excel files I believe it is a office 2003 upgrade problem. Now what?

Hi
never heard of that. Normally you should have no problems with older
Excel files. Does turning your Antivirus software help?

Thx Frank anyway. I have disabled norton real time protection still no help. Again, I am trying to open older excel files in excel 2003. Anyone else?

Have you thought of reinstalling xl2003?

(There shouldn't be a problem with this--else MS wouldn't be able to sell any
upgrades to xl2003.)

Just how old is old?

I remember a long time ago, having a similar problem changing from XL5.0 on
a Win3.x machine to Win98 and XL97.

As long as I rejected the "update to new version" question, my old 5.0 files
worked fine.
On the first few where I accepted the "upgrade", I lost them to "cannot
recognize file" error messages.
Surprisingly, this didn't always happen immediately. Sometimes I could use
a WB once or twice, but then finally lose it eventually down the line.

This really isn't any help, but I repeat, how old is old?

Update: have tried the reinstall & now am trying the uninstall with partial
install. I understand your comment. Word nor Excel previous files are
opening. Also there is a global template file problem with "normal.dot". I
have found information on the normal.dot issue and working to fix that as
well.

RD, old meaning Office Professional 2000 files build this year. I am looking
for specific technical assistance on setup. Apparently the typical
installation is not valid for some reason. Outlook is the only program in
the suite that I feel is running as designed right now.

I have reloaded excel again with the same problem. If I were to reload Word
I suspect the same problem would appear there as well.

Any true techie out there?

Disregard the chasing of the previous file. It is any file built for that
program. I am attempting to load the suite on another PC to see how it
reacts at this time.

Stay tuned

Ok here you go. I was WRONG. I uninstalled and reinstalled by Norton Corp.
Antivirus and all is up in running in Excel. :) I will now reinstall the
remaining suite and suspect all will be fine. Thx! all who attempted to
assist.
