how do I overlap oval shapes so the entire oval shows?

I am creating a word document which has a column of oval shapes which overlap
each other. Using the oval shape from the drawing tool "stacks" each oval so
that the one above covers part of the next oval. I need each oval to show
complete - even where they overlap. I would also like to insert letters
which are surrounded by a circle.

Any help would be very much appreciated.

Format | AutoShape | Colors and Lines | No Fill (or select the shape and
choose No Fill on the Fill button on the Drawing toolbar). If you do this
with the first shape and then copy or duplicate it, they'll all be the same.
