How do I prevent Office from crashing?

I had Office:mac and recently updated to the 2008 version. I installed
two updates and then tried opening Microsoft Word. It crashed before
anything resembling the program appeared.

I uninstalled and removed everything related to Office:mac then
started the installation from scratch. I was able to open an Excel
file but then it went back to crashing. Every program (Word, Excel,
PowerPoint, Entourage) crashes except Messenger.

Can anyone help me identify the problem?

The crash report doesn't give me any clear indication of the problem. Before
we go further, let's do a quick test.

1) Go to System Preferences --> Create a New User in Accounts. Switch to the
New User by logging out/in or use Fast User Switching. Test Office there.

If it opens OK in the new User's account, then it's your User's folder.

If it does not open in the new User, we need to look at both your OS files
and your Office install. Download and install the Apple combo updater and
see if that helps. This is a quick fix that will often help in situations
like this, but I suspect it's going to take a bit more.

Looks like we have identified the problems are in your User's folder. This

From your symptoms of other applications having problems, I would test step
4 (eliminate other applications) first because it's the quickest. Then test
for fonts. I can't see an Entourage database problem affecting Word and
Excel. We can probably eliminate steps 5,6, & 7 too since they are specific
to Entourage.

BTW, do you use any font software? Follow the steps for troubleshooting
fonts(step #8) and also see this link:

If fonts aren't the issue, test for other preferences (step 3)

Let me know what you find. Let's hope it's something simple like cache
files.

Diane,
I tried many of the things you suggested but what it ultimately came
down to was holding down the "Shift" button when opening Word. I
haven't had a problem since. Every Microsoft program now opens as it
should.

Just to be clear. It was holding down Shift for Word that fixed it? I've got
to run this past the Word MVPs to see what that fixes. Nice to have another
option in the arsenal of fixes.
