How do I protect only certain items in a word document

Whether you can & how to do it depends to a great extent on:

What an 'item' is
What version of Word
Your intended goal
How the doc is structured

Try using the Message area to provide a reasonable amount of detail &
perhaps someone can offer some responsible suggestions rather than random
guesses :)
