How do I publish ppt 97 to the web

M

mom3

I have a PPT 97 slideshow that I am having a very hard time getting up on the
web, or even in a format that people can instantly view. It has a linked
sound file. I saw somewhere that I should be able to post it as a web page
and then send it as a link in an e-mail, but I don't know how to do this.
Please help! I'm several weeks behind on this.

M

Michael Koerner

In PowerPoint97 the Web Option was not automatically installed when you
installed PowerPoint You will have to insert the original CD and do an
installation, and just select the Web Authoring tools.

I checked and the Web Publishing Wizard is already installed. However, I went
through the steps several times and every time I would get the following file
error msg: "cannot find LAUNCH16.DLL"

What am I doing wrong? Or, is there any other way I can get this slideshow
up on the web?

M

Michael Koerner

Your probably not doing anything wrong. First I would search my system for
the Launch16.dll file just to see if it is even on my computer. I can't
recall if 97 had a detect and repair when you inserted the CD as if in an
installation. if not I would reinstall the Web tools, and see if that works

Okay. I went back into the web publ wizard and got all the way through to the
step where I indicate my ISP (which is AOL, by the way) so that I can publish
to the right server (I suppose). But now when I click NEXT, it just sits
there. When I try to CANCEL, it says "the wizard is not finished publishing
yet, are you sure you want to cancel?"

I don't know if my slideshow (which is linked to a 49 MB sound file) is just
to big and that's why it's stalling, or what. I want to place a link to this
slideshow onto my website so that others can see it, but I'm stuck. Please
help!!!

Hi,

49 meg could take a while to upload. I use Front Page so have not had
personal experience.

Normally, you publish your presentation to an HTML file you publish to a
folder on your HD, and then upload the files to your web space.

Thanks. But I did try that and when I went to upload the folder onto my site,
I was prompted to open the folder and choose a file from inside. Well, of all
the various files inside the folder, I don't know which one to select. So,
can you tell me how I can either just simply upload the whole folder, or
which file inside the folder to select? It's obviously not the index.htm
because that only brought up error messages that indicated the source
download file couldn't be located.

When you publish your presentation to HTML you should get a file entitled
"your_presentation.html" you should also get a folder called
"your_presentation_files" Of course "your_presentation" is replaced with
your presentation name. You copy the file and the folder to your site and
you reference the presentation filename. here is a link to my on-line
presentation www.oldfco.ca/tutorial/pptohtml.html

When I saved as an html in PPT, I only got a folder with the same file name
as the presentation. I didn't get a separate html file at all. I'm going to
try saving as a html again in PPT and see what happens then. (Warning: I may
be back!)

Thanks!

Why not just an EXE that the user can download, which plays your PPS
show?

I've written a commercial program to solve this problem. There is even
a free license you can use that will do all you want to free.

Download AutoRun from: http://www.typhoonsoftware.com

Unlock AutoRun with the following:
Name free
Serial Number autorunfree.com

Start a new project, give the project a name and press Start wizard.
You can give your CD and name and title, select 'Open a File' from the
drop down box, then browse to your PPS file. and click Done.

You'll see your file added to the workspace, under Failsafe Program
(AutoRun will run this program - the installer to PowerPoint Viewer if
the user cannot view PPS files) select 'All Operating Systems' the
select the MS PowerPoint Viewer installer program. That's it.

Press the Create button to create your project files and the Test
button to try it out. You can play around with other settings like
background colors, images, music and more. When you are done modifying
your project press the Create button to update the project files. Then
burn the contents of your project folder (you can view this by clicking
on the button to the right of the Test button) to CD and you're done.

AutoRun will launch your PPS file from CD. If the user does not have
PowerPoint or the PowerPoint Viewer on their computer, AutoRun will
launch the PowerPoint Viewer installer, install the viewer and then
open your PPS file.

Now to create the single EXE file, from the menubar choose
Actions->Create Project as a Single EXE. A Window will come up where
you can name the EXE file and choose the folder it is created to.
Upload the created file and it will run just like your CD would.
