The textfile approach in the first linked webpage is sensible, but it
only works for a single user. If there could be multiple users,
especially at multiple locations, it gets more complicated. There are
times there's no good substitute for a centralized database.

Even if there's only one location, if there are multiple users, some
means of preventing simulataneous access to the text file containing
the serial number is necessary.

There are several similar approaches which may be found using a Google
Groups search in the Excel newsgroups searching on the phrase 'invoice
number'. Most are VBA-based, so applicable to Word as well.
