how do i put little numbers after words for referencing?

i am writing an essay and want to use the harvard referencing system. i want
to know how to put the little numbers at the end of a sentence to reference
it?

Word 97-2003: Insert | Reference | Footnote.

Word 2007: References tab | Insert Footnote (or Insert Endnote).

Although it seems that you are describing a footnote/endnote reference mark,
you might want to google "Harvard referencing system" before going further,
since it appears that that system calls for "(author, date)" citations in
the text, keyed to an alphabetical reference list at the end--no reference
marks needed.
