how do I put the appendix letter with the page numbers in TOC

I have a need to modify the TOC page numbers for the pages of an appendix
automatically, to look like this:

First heading ............................... 1
Second heading .......................... 3
Appendix A heading ........................ A1
Appendix B heading ........................ B1

Is this possible in a single TOC?

Yes, provided the A and B are added to the page numbers (as "chapter
numbers") in the appendixes (see
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Numbering/ChapterNumber.htm and
http://www.ShaunaKelly.com/word/numbering/NumberingAppendixes.html).

But it is really rather pointless when numbering is restarted in the
appendixes so that all the page numbers in the TOC are 1. It makes more
sense to add the chapter numbering to the appendixes, using an otherwise
unused heading level (which can be identical in format to Heading 1) as the
appendix heading and then include just the appendix title in the TOC (such
as "Appendix A: Title of the appendix"), without page numbers. Say you have
used Heading 4 for the appendix headings; these will appear in the TOC as
TOC 4, which you can format to be identical to TOC 1, and you then omit
numbering for level 4.

And if there is just one or two appendixes (without page numbers), they
don't even have to inserted by the TOC field; you could just type them below
the actual TOC.

I sometimes do that, and sometimes I create a separate TOC for the
appendixes. In addition, because the appendix number is usually not part of
the appendix title (they're two separate paragraphs), I usually add the
"Appendix A" numbering to the TOC style at that level.
