How do I reactivate the maximising of windows from the Taskbar?

I seem to have lost the ability to maximise windows directly from the
taskbar. It will allow you to select the windows to open from useing switch
windows function. This is annoying as you are not able to click on the
inactive window to bring it back. How can this be resolved. I have had this
issue before and I can't remember how it was resolved.

Have you tried right-clicking on the icon and then selecting "maximize" from
the drop down menu?
