How do I read compacted OE dbx files?

I finally answered yes to the request to compact my OE files and now I
realize I don't know how to access my old email. I had some important emails
that I wanted to keep. I see the DBX files in my store directory, but I
can't figure out how to get OE to pull them back in so I can read them again.
Thanks!

Firstly be ware for the future that this group is for outlook, part of
MS office, not Outlook EXPRESS.
secondly, your old email is still in the same folders that it was
before, compacting doesn't change that. Are you saying that your old
folders are no longer visible when you open OE?

Yes, my old folders disappeared - except for a couple of personal folders and
the defaults like inbox, sent, etc. I don't know why some old folders
remained and others disappeared. I see DBX files in the store directory for
each of my old folders so I know they still exist.

And sorry for using the wrong forum. I've never posted requests for help
before, but I'm desperate.

Create a new identity and import the old data....

I really appreciate your help. Unfortunately, when I create a new identity
the old DBX files still are not seen. I must have corrupted a file that
points to those files - I have no idea. When I move the files to a new
directory, I get an error message that there are no messages in the folder or
the messages are being used by an active program. There are messages and I
don't think those message are being used by any programs.

got any other ideas?

You need to include the file called folders.dbx. Did you try importing
from the old message store into the new identity?

Yes, I tried importing from the original message store folder and a new
folder I created with all the old DBX files. I tried importing with and
without the folders.dbx file. There is a DBX file for every sub-folder I had
previously created under the Local folder. I have recreated all the
sub-folders since most of them disappeared after I compacted my email. I
tried replacing the new DBX files associated with the newly created
sub-folder with the old DBX file and nothing seems to work. The old DBX
files just aren't seen by OE.
