How do I rearrange tasks.

How can I rearrange tasks on the gantt chart, such as swap it with the task
directly above or below on the numbered list? Also, how can I delete a task
and shift everything upwards? Copy and past screws up all the predecessors.
I thought these problems had been fixed in MS products when Excel came into
being.

Nevermind, I figured it out. To move things you click the grey area that
numbers the tasks. To delete a task, you select it in that same place and
hit delete.

Yes, but have you found where Project has a cool feature that Excel doesn't?
Project actually lets you hit the Insert button to actually insert a line in
your schedule.

I did notice the insert button, which seems infinitely more useful now that I
figured out how to rearrange tasks. I would like to change the key to make
things a little more left-hand-centric (I glue my right hand to my mouse)...
but I can't find a keyboard shortcut assigner like MS Word has. I should
note that I am used to 2003 and earlier products, using project 2007.

Sorry, Microsoft Project does not have the same capacity as Word
to assign items to custom keyboard shortcuts. Project, although
a Microsoft product does not follow many of the same conventions.
By the same token, no other Office Product has the same
capacity as Project.

However, there are quite a few keyboard shortcuts in Project.
For example, to select a row so you can delete it, try
Shift+spacebar.

To your comment about "copy and paste screwing up predecessors"
make sure the option "autolink inserted or moved tasks" is
disabled in Tool > Options, Schedule tab.
