How do I receive programs to open common email attachments?

I am receiving emails on my brand new IBM laptop that I cannot open the
attachments. On my old IBM laptop, I was receiving the same email
attachments and I could just click on the attachment and it would open. It
must be a very common program because most of the attachments are sent to me
in this form. I already have Adobe and it works for those attachments. The
Icon on the attachments that I cannot open appear to be two small overlapping
blue shields. I am not smart enough to figure out what format these are
coming to me in.

Attachment can be just about any computer file. For each computer file, you
will need the appropriate software to open it. The computer relies on the
file extension to know which software (if available) to use to open the
file. For example, the Adobe Acrobat Reader can open the .PDF file.

Check the file extension of the attachments you receive and there are Web
sites that show which software opens which file extension.

BTW, this newsgroup is for Microsoft Access, a database application. If you
have questions with e-mails / attachments, you should post to thenewsgroup
for the e-mail client you are using.
