how do I reinstall office 2000 when I've lost the disks ?

This is a very stupid, basic question, I think.
I am a mac user but a few years ago I brought a Sony vaio notebook for
watching rushes and writing scripts when I had to do work in a hurry for
people who could only deal with windows. My son also used it. Son off to Uni
... and I had to do a Powerpoint presentation. Got the Vaio out and .... son
has as far as I can tell deleted office (he has confessed to having a
problem, deleting what he could and then giving up). He doesn't know where
the disks are. The bottom of the vaio has a number - a key for Windows 2000
professional.
Can I download office 2000 from somewhere with that key or do I need to buy
Office or even Windows again. I'm loathe to do so because I use it so rarely.
Any thoughts, please ??

Office keys are different from Windows keys. And even if you did have the
Office key, there's no way to get a copy of Office based on that. The days
of getting replacement disks for Office 2000 are loooooooooooong gone.
Assuming Office came with the laptop, you would *have* to go to Sony for
help and BELIEVE ME, Sony wouldn't help. (I've yet to see a post from anyone
who has had the OEM replace the Office CDs.)

You have two options: Find those Office CDs or purchase Office again. Office
2003 is the current version.

(You should check the version of Windows and make sure that it's compatible
with Office 2003. You would have to have Windows 2000 *with service pack
3*.)

You cannot download MS Office, You can download 'openoffice' which can
read/write office docs.

The key on the Vaio is to Windows 2000. The win2k cd may have been vaio
specific which means another win2k cd may not work with it.

Alternatives are Ebay or similar for genuine 'old' installation disks, or
buy retail versions from amazon.
You could also try Sony for replacement media for your system, it depends
how old the sys is.

CD's supplied with systems are important, to the continued use of the sys.
Suggest you reinstall your son :)

You will need to acquire the CDs for the Version of Office 2000 that you
have the key for in the open market. e-bay, garage sale, wherever.

Well thank you both very much for this - I will try Open office or upgrade to
Office 2003.
I appreciate the speed as well... still time for me to get to the software
shop !

Best wishes

He doesn't have the key for Office tho. He has a key for Windows. Gonna cost
him - or his son.

Oops! Misread what the key was for. Guess the only thing they have of
Office 2000 is memories.
