How do I remove hyperlink style?

The autocorrect option for hyperlink styles is off but each time I highlight
a word and use ctrl-k to apply a URL I am still presented with the hyperlink
style.

I would like to delete the style, since blue underlined text is an awful
combination for a print medium, but this only removes the style from the
list. The next hyperlink still uses (!).

You can modify the Hyperlink and FollowedHyperlink characters style to have
the formatting you want. The general principles are described at

thanks for the prompt reply.

The hyperlink provided describes how to change the stles (somewhat more
complicated than office 2000) but it does not say how I can stop the style
being applied in the first place. I do not want a 'hyperlink' style being
applied, even if it had no formatting, I only want the default paragraph
style.

I presume that I can make changes to the normal template (if I can find it),
but word has this habit of using other templates, or resetting the normal
template. I would like to make an application wide change (similar to what
the autocorrect option should have done ... after all I am adding a hyperlink
.... not changing a format ... so why should the formatting be changed at all?)

BTW. the default style does not appear in the list of styles, so I was
unable to apply it over the hyperlink style ... is there a reason for this.

Sorry, I misunderstood your original question. To get rid of the Hyperlink
style you should be able to perform a Find and Replace. Press Ctrl+H to
display the dialog box. Click More to show all options in the dialog.

With the insertion point in "Find what," click Format button | Style, locate
the Hyperlink style. For "Replace with," specify the Default Paragraph Font.

Click Replace All.

In a web browser, hyperlinks usually have a different format. The Hyperlink
and FollowedHyperlink character styles are just Word's implementation of
this. My point was that modifying the styles will be easier than removing
them from text. You can change the styles in the Normal template as well as
in any custom template.

OK... I understand that I can search and replace (for each document and after
each edit?)... but why does word apply hyperlink style and how can i stop it
forever? It does not even give me the chance to undo the style and keep the
hperlinked address.

As I wrote, Word is trying to mimic the web browser. There is no way to turn
it off.

Rather than using find and replace after you've added hyperlinks, modify the
character styles. Then you could just ignore them.

There is no option for suppressing application of the hyperlink style when
creating a hyperlink in Word. Even if you insert the hyperlink field
manually (Ctrl+F9, type hyperlink "name of link", and press F9), Word still
applies the Hyperlink style to it.

The only way around this I can think of would be to use a macro that
immediately applies the current default paragraph font style to the link
after inserting the hyperlink. Note that depending on what style is being
used, this might not always be Default Paragraph Font. Even if you use a
macro, however, you'll still be stuck if/when the template containing the
macro gets corrupted (eventually, all heavily used templates get corrupted
at one time or another, in my experience).

As Stefan indicated, if the desired result is to avoid blue underlining,
it's much easier to modify the Hyperlink and FollowedHyperlink styles. I
understand what you're saying about these changes being undone if you have
to reset normal.dot, or simply not used if you use a different template to
create a document, but those are the immutable "facts of life" in using
Word. However, if you keep backup copies of a working and uncorrupted
customized Normal.dot and other templates you customize to "tame" the
hyperlink styles, then you have restoration from backup as an option when/if
normal.dot or other templates get corrupted and need to be reset.

Hmm... Applying the Default Paragraph Font is equivalent to clearing the
directly applied font formatting (and reverting to the paragraph style
applied to text). Whether the character style is based on Default Paragraph
Font or on "(underlying properties)" should make no difference. However, if
you are saying that there could be other direct formatting applied to the
text, this is true, of course. That would also be removed by the Default
Paragraph Font.

And of course, selecting the hyperlink and pressing Ctrl+Spacebar would also
remove the Hyperlink style. Unfortunately, if someone clicked on the link,
it would acquire the Followed Hyperlink style.

If you're preparing a document for print only, do you really need active
hyperlinks? You can certainly type URLs as plain text, and they will then
not have the Hyperlink style.
