How do I remove the (1) from local phone numbers

I'm using Outlook 2002. All local phone numbers have a (1) in front of them.
How do I remove it? When I sync my cell phone, it won't dial with the (1)
there. Thanks in advance.

There is no setting to remove them from existing Contacts. Nor can Outlook
do a global search and replace. Here are some alternatives:

Seems to me that you should also set Outlook not to add the country code
automatically to local numbers.
