how do I remove the control toolbox in word?

I seem to be able to do this okay but only temporarily-as soon as I save my
work then go back into any word document again it's back.

It's very annoying because the commands I use a lot (like the basics of font
size, bold ,italics etc) are hidden due to the space being taken up on the
menu bar for the control toolbox items-HELP!!
