How do I repair split table boxes in Word?

In Word - Office XP Pro with Publisher 2002.
When I try to create a table, it breaks it up down the page in one line half
boxes - totally useless. I have tried Detect & Repair and re-installing to no
avail. Any help will be gratefully received, thanks. DC
