How do I restore automatic conversion of [space]-[space] to a dash in Word 2000?

In Word 2000 for Windows, if I typed a space, a hyphen, a space, and
then another word or character, the hyphen would automatically expand
to a dash character.

This no longer happens; the hyphen just remains a hyphen without
expanding to the visibly longer dash.

I can't find the setting for this in the Options, but I'm sure that's
where I should be looking.

How do I restore it to automatically expand such hyphens to dashes?

From the word 2000 help

Hyphenate text automatically
On the Tools menu, point to Language, and then click Hyphenation.
If the Hyphenation command does not appear on the Language submenu, you
may need to install the hyphenation tool. Select the Automatically
hyphenate document check box.

Um, I don't think that's what he meant Wayne...

The way I would do it would be to use the Tools | Autocorrect options and
turn off the "Hyphens (--) with dash (-)" checkbox in the "Autoformat as you
type" tab. It isn't particularly obvious from the words but that is one of
the undocumented results of this particular option.
