Mary is right on this. I burned much tread spinning wheels, as follows.
After a MS Office 2003 update of a few months ago, our Microsoft Office
Document Image (MODI) Writer print driver disappeared. We reinstalled MODI a
couple times, with no help. Some MS forum helpers asked if we had enabled
MODI (writer?) after reinstall, but we could not see how to do so or to use
Add Printer dialog to access the tool. Finally, we called MODI from the
Start Menu, Office Suites, MS Office, MS Office Tools, ran it, tried some
options. In MODI menu, Tools .. Options .. Other, File Import Preferences
presented an error message, “Microsoft Office Document Image Writer is not
installed. Please uninstall and then re-install the Microsoft Office
Document Imaging application.â€
So we closed most open apps (especially all MS Office apps), ran Add/Remove
Programs (from normal boot, as the Office installer would not work from Safe
Mode), selected MS Office 2003, Change, Add/Remove Features, checked block
“Choose advanced customization of applications,†Office Tools, MODI, removed
all 3 components (Scan, OCR and Indexing Service Filter; Help; MODI Writer)
by setting them to “Not Available,†clicked Update to complete removal.
Process indicated successful removal, so we returned to Add/Remove Programs,
MS Office 2003, Change, Add/Remove Features, check “Choose advanced
customization …,†Office Tools, MODI, and for all 3 components, set choice to
“Run all from my computer,†and clicked Update. The process demanded our
Office CD-ROM for these components, we inserted same in drive, and process
concluded OK. We tried printing to the MODI print driver and it worked OK.
For these restoration efforts, I conclude that my main troubles were due to
failure to Uninstall MODI before reinstalling it.
