Unless you are either emptying the deleted folder when you close outlook
(tools, options, other) or are using autoarchive to delete them, they will
remain in the deleted items folder until you empty it. Oh, or your exchange
admin (if you use exchange) can delete them using mailbox manager.
If you want to automatically delete them after xx days, set up autoarchive.
Right click on the deleted items (and junk folder) and choose properties.
Set AutoArchive to delete mail older than xx days from this folder. Then go
to tools, options, other, autoarchive and configure archiving to run every y
days. You can run it daily if you want. I usually set the folders to keep
mail for 3 days then ran autoarchive every 3 so I'd have up to 6 days old.
