How do I retrieve a lost Word document?

I changed the name on a file last week and deleted the old
file. Today when I went to find the renamed version it
was missing. I did a search using the browse function and
found the file name but instead of being listed with the
Word W icon it had a Windows rainbow colored icon. I
tried may times to open it with no success. Please advise.

Have you checked the your temp files? You could also enter Word, Click File
and check the most recently used file list.

Tried Temp files nothing. File check recent files no go I
have opened many files since last week. Thanks though.
As I said I see the file but with a MS Windows icon next
to the file. I try to open that file and a dialoge box
ask if you want to use rich text etc...I try and it opens
jibberish, any guidance would be appreciated.

When you renamed the file, you evidently ignored the warning about changing
the file extension. If you could see this file in Word's File Open dialog
(display All Files), Word will still recognize it as one of its own
(internally) and open it. To be able to open it from Windows Explorer, you
need to rename it again and add the .doc extension.

Thanks. I did change the extension as you suggested and
it was only the short cut icon with no document
attached.
I think my problem maybe that I renamed the
file "virusfileexe" in hopes no one would ever open it. I
realize now that was a bad move. Especially since the
lost document is full of important information that I have
no back up of.

.
Go to the "My Computer" icon on the desktop instead. Open
it up and click on "My Documents". The file should be
there for excel and word documents
