how do I scan a page with multiple columns?

We are trying to use the document imaging and ocr more and more and have
problems scanning a printed page when it has multiple columns.
Is there something that I'm missing in terms of set-up?

Scanning produces images, images don't have "columns". You will need to
select the area to be converted to text, if you are wanting to OCR the
image and convert the text into columns.
