How do I select a .PST file for Scanpst.exe

F

I am trying to run Scanpst.exe to try to resolve an Outlook problem.
However, when it tells me to select the file I want to scan, and I go to
Browse, I can locate Microsoft Office/Outlook in different places, but when I
click on Outlook, it is not a .pst file. The system will not perform the
scan. What am I doing wrong?

Are you sure you clicked on outlook.pst and not some other file? In Folder
Options configure Windows to show file extension to make sure you're
clicking the right file.

Use the Mail applet in Control Panel to find the exact name and location
of your PST file(s).

I had this problem too. Pain in the ... I tried everything but would get the
message Errors have been detected in file blah blah blah...outlook and all
mail enable and use inbox repair tool scanpst.ext to diagonos and repair....

HUH?? My items wouldn't delete. Nothing worked until by accident I figured
out how to do it. Lots of people are having this issue with no HeLP... Simple
language
Here is what you do...
Step 1: Go in your start menu bottom left corner
Step 2: Click on SEARCH (NOT run)
Step 3: In the chose of Search files and folders make sure you check the box
that shows if you want hidden files.
Step 4: There will be 3 boxes ...In the search top box type in the words
scanpst.exe , leave the next box empty and the last box drop down menu you
choose to look in your C drive on your computer.
Step 5: It will search and find 2 scanpst files choose the top scanpst
fileone RIGHT
click it.
Step6: This is your Office 12 file believe it or not....Find the file that
says scanspst looks like a broken envelop if you have your settings to show
icons...open it to browse box
Step7: Type in the browse box exactly what it said your error was...EXAMPLE
mine was....

C:\Documents and Settings\HP_Administrator\Local Settings\Application
Data\Microsoft\Outlook\Outlook1.pst

It runs the file and actually repairs the files! Now I went in and deleted
all of the ones stuck in my inbox and my deleted items with no issues!!

P.S Another hint.....If you can not find which pst file you need you can
just go into
your microsoft OUTLOOK then
1. Go into TOOLS at top choose account settings
2. Then Click on Tab that says Data files
3. Right click and COPY the pst. file
4. Close all the outlook program.

This really is very easy to do ....after putting up with errors for over 1
month of trying to understand how to fix things with no one out there with an
easy answer. This will work I made it as easy as Microsoft should have to fix
this issue. How many of us really know where any of those stupid files are.
Good Luck!

I understand what you are going through. Smart people just don't give good
directions for the average person to be able to do. Common instructions is
all we need.
