How do I separate shapes combined by "shape operations"

I would like to be able to separate shapes that I combine in the Shape
Operations (Subtract) command. I have tried "Fragment" but that does nothing.

Hi FZ,

Fragment will slice the shapes much as a cookie-cutter would. You will get
all close shapes formed by any intersecting lines.

Lines segments that don't form closed shapes will disappear. For instance,
if you fragment and X, you'll get nothing.

You can do the trim operation, which will create all possible line segments.
Even an X will give you four line segments. But it won't give you any closed
shapes.

The [rigourous] process is this:

1. Trim the shape(s)
2. Join all line segments that belong together
3. Add fill to close shapes, if desired
4. Fragment any closed shapes in case they aren't taking a fill

Hope this helps,
