How do I set permissions with AOL?

S

sromchambers

When I try to set permissions for a subweb using Frontpage 2003, I get a
message that I need to use a world wide browser like Internet Explorer? I am
currently using AOL 9.0 dial up. We do not have the availability for DSL
yet. Hence, I can not use the preferred Internet Explorer 6. What I want to
do is set permissions for a Frontpage 2003 generated discussion board where
the user sets the end permissions. I've tried repeatedly and get the same
message every time. Quite frustrating! Is there anything I can do? Also,
has a fix been made for the Frontpage problem of too many postings causing a
dual header?

After you logon to AOL, can't you just minimize the AOL Browser window
and open up Internet Explorer and use it? Unless it's changed, AOL used
to be one of the worst dial-up services to use when trying to do
anything serious over the internet.

You don't need a DSL for IE. Install IE, then set up your dial up account
and signon with the phone number AOL provided.
Also, does AOL provide FP Extensions?
Your question regarding too many postings is too vague to answer.

I am AOL dial-up user and minimize AOL and use IE6. My main problem has been
with being disconnected (by AOL or maybe Bell South problem with line?)
which plays havoc with Windows Updates and Publishing.

Does AOL use a Proxy Server - if it does that could be causing the problem
with setting permissions.

The "too many posts" problem (where the discussion web breaks when a large
number of posts have been made - "large" varies system to system) in the
discussion web is still there.

I can indeed minimize AOL and use the IE 6. However, I am still unable to
set permissions. Using the IE 6 with AOL minimized allows no different
options than if I were just using AOL. There has to be a problem with
compatibility. Microsoft says it is an AOL problem, and AOL said it is a
Microsoft problem. I'm getting the run around. Frontpage is apparently not
recognizing that I am already connected to the web while using AOL. Any
suggestions?

If it's any help, this is the message I receive in a pop window:

"a red circle with an X in it" then- A World Wide Web browser, such as
Microsoft Internet Explorer, is required to use this feature.

Can you try using a different ISP? Experience shows that the problem lies
with AOL, and the way AOL connects its users to the (non-AOL) internet.

Ronx,

I was able to set permissions from another computer which is on a school
network. I did this last summer. However, I just tried again today using
that same computer and I was unable to even log on. They may have changed
their network settings. I don't know. It seems that after logging on to my
website, I should be able to set the permissions. Would I be able to access
my website from another computer that is using Frontpage? It seems that
there is a setting somewhere which prohibits this. Any thougts? I really
need to resolve this issue.

You should be able to logon to your website with FrontPage from any computer
with direct access to the internet. However, if the computer goes through a
firewall and/or proxy server, the connection path may have to be modified
to allow FrontPage to function correctly.

In a Firewall, FrontPage requires port 80 to be opened - for some firewalls
FP should be set as a server.

A proxy server may prevent the logon process totally, and the web site
should be set as an exclusion from using the proxy. [ in Internet
Explorer, Tools->Internet Explorer - Connections Tab,
If use a dial-up modem, highlight the connection and click Settings
If a proxy has been set up, click Advanced
In the exceptions box, add your website URL in the form
http://www.example.com
exactly in the form you to publish to, or open, the site.
If you connect through a LAN, click the LAN Settings, then the Advanced
Settings for the Proxy Server if one has been set up. Add your web site to
the exceptions as above.
Note that you may not be able to avoid using the Proxy Server in some
systems - this may make it difficult to use FrontPage.

Ronx,

This appears to be the most helpful information that I have received yet.
I'll give this information a try. Thanks
