How do I set up outlook 2000 for multiple users

I have Outlook 2000 set up on one computer with Win 2k Professional. I have
it set up to prompt for which of three users to start and then it opens up
the appropriate pst file and user profile.

I have just bought a new laptop with win XP and can't duplicate that
functionality. It seems only to offer me the option of setting up different
xp users each with their own outlook profile, which requires that I log off
the current user and go to the second user in order to check that mail. Am I
doing something wrong? or is this a funtion of XP?

Also, if it is a function of XP, would a more current version of Outlook
allow me the functionality of prompting for a user profile when I start
Outlook?

It usually best to setup seperate users but you should be able to get
Outlook to prompt for MAPI profiles here: Control Panel > Mail > Show
Profiles. Select the 'Prompt' option.

That works ok on my win 2k computer...but when I go to the XP computer and
choose Control Panel>Mail I do not get the same window next. On the win2k
computer I get a window that says "Pro's Email Properties" and has a button
for "show profiles" but on the XP computer I get a window that says
"Internet Accounts" and has no button for "Show Profiles" That window does
allow me to set up other e-mail accounts and choose which is to be the
default, but not to view them separately

You apparently have Outlook 2000 installed in Corporate/Workgroup mode on
the Windows 2000 system and in Internet Mail Only mode in the Windows XP
system. You can change the mode on the XP system and it will behave the
same way as the W2K system.

Can you advise how I change the mode? I must admit I didn't even know there
were two modes, so whatever I did, it was completely accidental.

That worked, but created a new problem. Now, I get the following error
message every time I start Outlook. (After dismissing the error message,
Outlook opens normally)

"An extension failed to initialize. Can't open file: C:\Documents and
Settings\Diane\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outloo.... The file
may not exist, you may not have permission to open it or it may be open in
another program."

Since the full path is not visible in the error message, I cannot find the
problem. I did go to the folder "C:\Documents and Settings\Diane\Local
Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\" and checked permissions on the
folder and all the files in it. I see no locked or "Read Only" files.

I tried a full reinstall of Outlook and that did not eliminate the problem.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Try renaming the extend.dat file in that folder.
