How do I set up page/printer to type a note onto my own card?

Am trying to type personal notes onto my cards measuring 6.25" Wide X 4.25"
Tall. Perform page set up, and printer set up, but printed area is too far
right and cut off. Have tried many different configurations, and am
suspicious of printer driver. Use Windows XP Home and newer HP laser printer.
Setup is in Microsoft Office Word 2003. Any advise?

Many printers don't handle custom sizes well. Unless your printer offers the
option to define custom printer sizes in the driver itself (not just in
Word), you have two options, both of which start with printing the document
you have set up onto a standard paper size (such as US Letter) to see where
it prints. Based on the results of that test you can:

1. Feed your small paper where the printer is expecting it to be (for
example, your printer may have paper guides to center small paper sizes, but
it prints custom sizes flush left or right).

2. Set up your custom size on a standard size, adjusting the margins
accordingly (in the middle of US Letter, for example, so that you can feed
through those centered paper guides).
