How do I set up presenter view in PowerPoint

I am trying to set up "presenter view" on my laptop and the slide show on my
projector. I have followed all the instructions in the MS PP help and the
presenter view will not come up on the laptop and the monitor/projector oly
shows my desktop with no icons or anything. Just the screensaver.
