How do I set up the phone field to format with dash in Outlook?

My Outlook contact field no longer puts the dash in the appropriate place
when just entering numbers. It use to do so. How can I repair?

How did you break it? Outlook does this automatically and cannot configure
it otherwise. It will be fascinating to learn how you did so.
