How do I set up word to formatted for standard U.S. 8 1/2" x 11"

If you have Windows regional settings set to a country that uses US Letter
size then Word when installed should have setup this page size by default.
You now need to check the regional settings then open the normal template
for editing and change the page size as required. Set your preferred body
text style for the opening line the preferred zoom and view settings. Type a
character in the text space and delete it. Then save and close the template.

Clue - the normal template is a normally hidden file in the folder indicated
at tools > options > file locations > user templates (or in Word 2007, Word
options > advanced > file locations > user templates).

Again, Graham, please note that it is NOT necessary to open Normal.dot (or
Normal.dotm) to make changes in Page Setup. This can be done by making the
changes in the Page Setup dialog and clicking Default... But the default
paper size in Word is also (initially) determined by the size selected in
the printer Properties.
