I have 2 computers on my network. I want the 2nd computer to have
access to all the emails that the 1st computer receives. In other
words, I want the 2 computers to share one set of email files. How
can I accomplish this with Outlook (or Outlook Express) ?
Note, what I'm about to describe is NOT SUPPORTED and may cause data loss.
Stop Outlook on each PC. Create a network share on one of the PCs. Then,
on that PC, rename Outlook's PST from its current location to the folder
you're sharing. Restart Outlook. When it complains that it can't find its
folders, browse to the new location of the PST, select it, and click OK.
You'll now have access to everything you had before. Close Outlook.
On the second PC, rename Outlook's PST to some other name, but keeping the
..PST extension. Start Outlook. WHen it complains, browse to the network
share, select the PST there, and click OK. Outlook on PC#2 will now access
exactly the same information as PC#1. If you wish, you can now either
import PC#2's renamed PST so that both systems can see the data or, what I
would do, use File>Open>Outlook Data File to open the renamed PST and then
drag-and-drop the data to the appropriate folders, eliminating in the
process any duplicates or unwanted information.
You can leave the second PST attached to Outlook so that there is a shared
PST and a local-to-the-PC PST. You can also create a second, local PST on
the first PC.
For Outlook Express, a similar approach might work. Put the DBX files on a
network share and use the Tools>Options>Maintenance tab to point Outlook
Express at the shared message store. I don't know if OE will allow it,
though.
