How do I specify an automatic number for my download pictures?

When I download pictures using Microsoft Picture manager I want to have the
software issue an identifying number to my pics instead of me selecting
random numbers.

Doesn't the camera, or whatever hardware you get these pictures with, give
them an automatic number?
