As you have quickly discovered, configuring and using Project Server 2007 is
not intuitive in the least. Here's a brief answer to your questions:
1. Before you create a work plan, you must launch Project Professional 2007
and create a Project Server login account. Click Tools - Enterprise
Options - Microsoft Office Project Server Accounts. Add a new login account
using the URL for your Project Server instance, then exit, relaunch Project
Professional 2007, and connect to Project Server. From here, create your
project plan and save it in the Project Server database.
2. To get messages to resources about their tasks, you first must build
your project team using Tools - Build Team from Enterprise. Then you must
assign each resource to one or more tasks in the project. Finally, you must
publish the project using File - Publish. The system will automatically
send e-mail messages to each team member about their tasks in the project.
3. You must be a Project Server administrator to create a new calendar.
Log into PWA with adminstrator permissions. Click the Server Settings link
in the Quick Launch menu and then click the Enterprise Calendars link in the
Enterprise Data section of the page. Click the New Calendar button and
create your new calendar.
Given your newness to this system, I would strongly recommend you consider
purchasing both of our company's books on Project Server 2007. One is
written specifically for the administrator, while the other is for the
project manager. You can order the books at:

Hope this helps.
