How do I stop getting 'Document failed to print'?

I am using Office 2000. I cannot print any documents or files. The printer
works fine on another computer. I have re-installed the printer driver.
Printing stopped while printing a 30 page Acrobat file and hasn't worked
since.

Does that acrobat file print on the other computer? I've had that
problem when the pdf file was corrupt. I had to reboot to get the
printer to work again. Then I re-downloaded the pdf.

Yes the Acrobat file prints on the other computer which runs Windows XP Home while my laptop runs Windows XP Pro SP1. My printer is a parallel HP Deskjet 720C running thru a Targus port replicator which itself uses one of the USB ports on the laptop. I have also tried a Canon USB printer plugged straight into the laptop itself but it also gets the dreaded "Document failed to print".
