how do i stop my writing list from going to the previous column?

I'm writing a list of names for a group. I set the page to make three
columns. When I finished my first column and continued on to my second, the
names were being added to the beginning of the previous column. Help!

The default is to fill a column before beginning another. You can force Word
to balance the columns by inserting a Continuous section break at the end of
the multi-column section, but the "balance" will keep changing as you add
text. If you want to start a new column at a specific point, you can insert
a column break (Ctrl+Shift+Enter). If this causes problems with, say,
spacing above a header, then a workaround is to apply "Keep with next"
formatting to enough paragraphs to force them into the next column.
