How do I stop shared files opening as read-only?

We have just networked our two computers within the home with wireless
networking. We are sharing our 'my documents' folders. If I open one of my
files via my husband's PC, they open as 'read-only'. On each occasion this
has happened, I have checked the file on my PC and the 'read-only' box isn't
ticked. How can I change this so I can open, work on and save files back on
my PC without having to save them as something different? We're both on XP
Home Edition and I have Microsoft Office XP Professional with Publisher
version 2002 installed.

Thanks, Sue

Its not an Office issue but one of security permissions set by the
operating system.

So can I change them? I really need to be able to access the files,
whichever computer I am on.

Since you are using Windows XP Home as the operating system, the group
to ask the questions in would be the Windows XP group. If you prefer to
read the instructions for changing permissions, I would suggest going to
Start, Help and Support, And use Folder Permissions as the search term.
