how do i stop the auto format on excel?

I am trying to enter the value 1-5 in a cell it and keeps auto changing into
the date! how do i stop this?

Pre-format the cell as text (Format>Cells...Text) or prefix with a single
apostrophe '. It won't show but will stop the conversion

Format the cell as text before you enter the value. The alternative is to
precede the value with an apostrophe.
