How do I take away SHAPE \* MERGEFORMAT formatting on a figure?

I just spent a bunch of time making a figure, but when I closed the file and
re-opened it, the drawing I made is gone, replaced with the words SHAPE \*
MERGEFORMAT. How do I get my figure back??

Press Alt+F9 to switch between display of field codes (what you see now)
and field results. If that doesn't help and if you have Word 2003 or
earlier, click on Tools | Options | View tab | uncheck the boxes for
"All", "Hidden text", and "Field codes" | Print tab | uncheck the
"Hidden text" and "Field codes" boxes | OK.
