How do I transfer Office XP 2002 from a broken to a new computer?

I had Office 2002 on my old laptop which was physically destroyed. How does
one get permission to install the Office 2002 software from the original CD
to the new laptop that I just purchased? I was told that all I had to do was
to contact Microsoft and they would issue a new product key..... but after
hours on the phone and their web site, I cannot find a human to help me with
this.

Did Office 2002 come preinstalled on the old laptop, i.e. is it an OEM
version? If so, you'll need to contact the manufacture of the laptop.
If it is a retail copy, i.e. one you bought separate from the laptop,
you should be able to install it on the new laptop using the old key.
Check the EULA to be sure.
