How do I turn off the Startup Task Pane

A

Andy Parker

The description for turning off the Startup Task Pane says to close all
documents before calling Tools -> Options. But, when all documents are
closed the Tools -> Options menu item is greyed out.

Andy is referring to is the instructions in Word 2003 Help:

--------------
Use this procedure to prevent the task pane from opening automatically
when you start Microsoft Office Word 2003.
1. Close all documents and WordMail messages.
2. On the Tools menu, click Options.
3. On the View tab, clear the Startup Task Pane check box.
4. Exit Word.

Kinda hard to access the Options dialog box when there isn't a
document open. Hmmm...could it be they plan on implementing one of our
wishes?? To allow access to the Options dialog without an open
document?? Wishful thinkging aside, more like they didn't test their
directions.

Although I guess they they at least *tried* to make sure users don't
encounter the issue of modifying options when more than one document
is open where the options in effect for the last closed document is
what updates the Registry and if you don't close the correct document
window last your modifications are discarded.

Oh well, I sent them my feeback...
