Outlook 2016 doesn't retain 'Off' selection for the Reading Pane

I am running Office 365 under Windows 10 Pro. All is well except that Outlook 2016 refuses to retain the 'Off' setting for the In box Reading Pane. Reading Pane settings for other folders are retained after restarts. Grateful to know how to deal with this
