How do I turn on Spell Check???

I have Office '97 and when I go to Tools, Options, the
entire top of OPTIONS box is turned off (grayed out), not
accessable and the box labeled "Hide spelling errors" in
checked. I want to check for spelling errors but don't
know how to turn it on!!! Help!
