How do I type on top of underscoring?

A Contract was typed in Microsoft Word using underscore to form a line where
info is to be typed on. When I type on this line, the underscoring
continues. How do I format this document so the line does not move?

Select all the underscoring and delete it, then type what you want where it
used to be. Underscore marks are Word characters and you can't type on top
of them. If you want the inserted material underlined, you must use
Underline in the Font menu (or the U on the formatting toolbar). So
underline and underscore are quite different.

If you want to be able to fill in blanks in a template document, it might be
better to used underlined tab marks.
