How do I unlock a shape window?

I have three rectangular areas horizontally on my document (which was
e-mailed to me). They have grey end points, indicating they are locked, and
I cannot resize them. How do I unlock them so I can place more shapes within
each one?

select the shape, then
menu Format -> Protection
and turn off Width.

Be careful as they may be locked for a reason.
