Whenever I open an existing document, I cannot edit the document. Any
attempt to edit fails and a message at the bottom of the screen indicates
that the document is locked. Additionally, I cannot create new documents and
the message at the bottom again states that the document cannot be edited
because it is locked.
:
Can you please clarify what you mean by "locked documents"?

This is not the trial version. I have used the purchased edition for a
few
years without any problem. Now all of a sudden I have the problem of
locked
documents. I don't know if this is a permissions problem, a sharing
problem
or a network problem. My computer is not on a network, rather connected
directly to the internet.

I reloaded MS Office 2003 Student & Teacher edition and exhausted all
help
options within the program, my computer and on the web to no avail.
It may be the "form lock". Try "View - Toolbars - Forms", and click the
padlock icon to toggle locking. If that helps, read along...
Did this happen to all your documents at once? Maybe you accidentally
locked the default document template (normal.dot)? I'm not sure if this
kind of change to the template will travel to documents based on that
template, but it's worth a try: rename your "normal.dot" (there may be
two files with that name on your disk) to "strange.dot", and restart
Word. Word will regenerate a missing "normal.dot", using all default
settings.
