How do I use ADVANCED FILTERS?

Do I need to create several emty rows up at the top of the worksheet? If so,
this will mess up all of my data won't it?
What if I want to filter by a different set of criteria?

I have never used advanced filters and feel totally lost.... HELP

Where is a good source to learn more about them? I will want to then
implement them into my userform, so I will need to modify them
programmically.
