How do import a dictionary from Frontpage on another computer?

B

Bruce Valeriani

I recently switched computers and need to port all my previous
dictionary/spelling entries from the old install to the new FP install....
what/which files would I need to port and where are they located?

TIA,

Bruce

I believe it uses Word's Custom dictionary (custom.dic)...
usually in: ....\Application Data\Microsoft\Proof

Hi, Rob.

I don't seem to be able to locate my Frontpage custom dictionary. I am
running Frontpage 2003.

I looked for custom.dic using Windows explorer. It found no *.dic on my
machine. It found some "dictionary file" type files, *.lex, in directory
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\PROOF. But those are not text
files.

I'm able to "Add to Dictionry" using Frontpage spell check.

Your input is highly appreciated.

Hi, Rob.

I found the file, C:\Documents and Settings\heleng\Application
Data\Microsoft\Proof\custom.dic.

The strange thing is the Search utility of Windows Explorer failed to find
the file. For example, if I specified Look In to be C:\, then it wouldn't
find the file. But if I specified the Look In to be "C:\Documents and
Settings\heleng\Application Data\Microsoft", then Search return the file.

.....\Application Data\ is a hidden, sytem file/folder. Set the search
to look in hidden and system folders.

actually .dic is a text file you can open it with Notepad and add more
custom words on your own as long as you follow the existing format, then
save it.

I know I am out of forum and time sequence, but it seems you know about the
default dictionary. My default dictionary is missing and I don't know how to
access it or re-build it. you mention adding to the default from the Notepad.
How is this done? Please help or refer issue to appropriate mvp.

You don't import it, you can open it in notepad, then copy the content into the custom.dic file on
the other computer or you could just copy it over.
