how do you count words/characters on word 2007

I cannot find the tool to count my words as i write in other words i want
to write an essay of 500 words no more how do i do that

In word 2003 go to tools \word count it will give you all the statistics
needed.

Word 2007 now has Live Word Count (it automatically updates as you type - no
need to refresh) that can be displayed in the status bar. If you do not see
the Word count (Words: ##) then right-click the status bar and then click
Word Count. For additional information, such as lines, characters, etc,
click the Word Count command in the status bar.
