How do I disable the virus warning message which appears when
activating an attached avi or other file?

Instead of using the "Hyperlink to...", "Other File" action setting, try
using the "Run Program" option. Check out the following for more info:

For AVIs I would definitely use Insert > Movies and Sounds > Movie from file,
rather than linking directly to the file. What other types of files are you
linking directly to?

Also, what version of PowerPoint are you running?
