How do you fix a corrupt document

In Word 2K, I open a document and am told "This document may be corrupt..."
Trying their suggested fix results in another corrupt document. I have tried
deleting large sections of the document to no avail. The document does not
appear to be corrupted in any visible way, but I'd sure like for the warning
to go away. Is there any way to zero in on the problem?
